Ioanna, co-founder of Upstream Nutrition, is a nutritionist and nutritional therapist. She practices evidence-based nutrition and supports clients of all ages and at every stage of life. Her particular areas of interest include gastrointestinal complaints, autoimmune diseases, energy and hormonal imbalances, pregnancy support and fertility issues.
Ioanna’s interest in nutrition stems from when she was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis at the age of 16. Since her diagnosis, Ioanna has spent several years researching autoimmune diseases, and has created her own treatment protocol which can be tailored and personalised to her clients' needs. Following her own treatment plan, Ioanna now enjoys a life free of hypothyroid symptoms and has successfully reduced her thyroid antibodies to within optimal ranges.
She supports that nutrition can be the cornerstone of a happy and balanced life allowing people to live life to their full potential. Her passion lies in the understanding of how environmental and lifestyle factors interact with our genes, and the consequences of this interaction on one’s health. Her focus is on the promotion of nutritional awareness and education, as preventive nutrition can play a key role in delaying disease development and altering one's genetic predisposition to a plethora of chronic conditions.
Fascinated by science and the impact of compounds on human physiology, Ioanna chose to pursue a 4-year Bachelor's degree in Chemistry. This is when Ioanna realised how powerful food can be, and the effect that it can have on the human body. Upon graduating, Ioanna was awarded a scholarship to undertake an MSc in Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Reading, which she completed with distinction.
Having completed her Master’s degree, Ioanna's interest grew in the field of Functional Medicine, a scientific, evidence-based approach to healthcare which uses personalised nutrition and lifestyle interventions. As a result, she undertook a 2-year postgraduate diploma in Naturopathic Nutrition, while at the same time she started training with the U.S. Institute of Functional Medicine.
Ioanna continues to develop her practice through research and conferences.
